Sleep Apnea Walnut Creek

Understanding Sleep Apnea and Its Treatments

Do you snore or feel tired throughout the day even though got a full night’s sleep?  You may have never heard of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but it could be affecting your health.  Sleep apnea is a very common sleep disorder – affecting more than 18 million people in the United States alone.

If you suffer from sleep apnea, the tissue in the back of your throat collapses as you sleep and blocks your airway – keeping air from reaching your lungs.  The lack of oxygen causes you to wake up throughout the night; however, you may not even be aware that you are waking up.  If left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea can become a great danger to your health.

This sleeping disorder has affected many of the San Francisco Bay Area patients that visit Pope Dental in Walnut Creek.  To better serve his patients, Dr. Scott Pope has included sleep apnea treatment in his continuing education.  Learn more about sleep apnea and the treatments we can offer to you.

Sleep Apnea Complications

If you have obstructive sleep apnea, you may have an increased risk of:

  • Heart attack or congestive heart failure
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Driving or work-related accidents

Sleep Apnea Treatments

There are behavioral changes you can make to reduce the severity of your sleep apnea, including:

  • Losing weight through diet and exercise
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Quitting smoking
  • Sleeping on your side

However, these may not be enough or you may not be willing or able to commit to the above life changes.

At the Walnut Creek location of Pope Dental, Dr. Pope can discuss with you other medical treatment options available to treat sleep apnea, including:

  • Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT): Using an oral appliance, similar to a mouth guard or retainer, can help reposition and stabilize your lower jaw and tongue to open the airway and reduce the blockage and snoring.
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP): CPAP involves wearing a mask over your nose and mouth while you sleep.  The machine attached to the mask will use pressurized air to keep your airway open.
  • Upper-airway Surgery: Depending on your specific needs, this surgery can be minimally invasive or more complex.
